Destination Weddings: Do you say ‘I do’?

Destination wedding are gaining in popularity in Nigeria.  I’m not sure why destination weddings are popular in other parts of the world but in Nigeria, I think a big part of it is that Nigerians love to show off.  Nigerians love the biggest, the most wanted and the most expensive.  Destination weddings fit right into the Nigerian ‘personality’.  A destination wedding (outside the country, obviously) says several things at once:

  1. I am unique (or at least, more unique than you)
  2. I have lots of money and
  3. This party is for a select few and you are not one of them.

Popular choices for destination weddings at the moment include The Gambia  and Dubai .  Extra points of course go to weddings held outside Africa.  If you pay the airfare for all your guests, you have practically won the game.

What do you think of destination weddings?  Did you have one?  Would you have one?  Tell us in the comments!

personally i would have a destination wedding cause seriously all the fanfare of Friends,Known and unkown frenemies being invited”or rather invite themselves” to the generic wedding in nigeria is just not for me,i’d like to keep my wedding personal and strictly by invitation and i would gladly pay the air fare of people i have invited and know cant afford it.
having lived almost all my life away from nigeria and also having bad experiences the little while i lived there

    Hi Fola,
I understand why you would like a destination wedding. I’m sad that you’ve had bad experiences the few times you’ve been in Nigeria. I’ve noticed this is common amongst Nigerians who grew up outside the country. Personally, although I hated big weddings and events when I was younger, now that I am older, I find those events, amusing, silly yet evoking feelings of warmth and happiness in me. I really can’t explain why or how my feelings about ‘owambes’ changed but they have. I hope you’ll feel a little positive about them someday too.

Thanks for stopping by my blog and commenting.

so true…i have had terrible experience…….amen to the know and unknown frenemies….best believe the smaller tight knit the weddding the better the outcome….my cousin had a huge wedding on the island…..and just breezing through the guest as her cousin i heard nothing but nasty remarks , judging , hissing….the poor girl thought oniranus were are friends…

    Hi,
Having a destination wedding to cut down on number of guests may make sense. I often wonder how to decide who to invite and who not to invite though. I think feelings would definitely be hurt. And then what if you really want your best friends to be there but they can’t afford the trip? Having a destination wedding doesn’t seem like an easier alternative to me which is why I probably won’t have one :-) Thanks for commenting on my blog.
