Travel pictures: Barcelona

Here are some pictures I took in Barcelona

sagrada familia

This is Sagrada Familia, a church in Barcelona.  Work began on it in 1882.  The famous architect, Antoni Gaudi took over work on the church in 1883 and continued until he died in 1926.  It is estimated that construction of the church will be completed in 2028.  It is a massive piece of art, much much bigger than can be imagined from seeing a photograph.

passeig de gracia barcelona

Architecture in Barcelona is unusual and eye-catching.  These buildings are in the area of Passeig de Gracia.

placa catalunya

This is Placa Catalunya which can be thought of as the city centre.  There’s a large fountain there as well as loads of benches to sit on and people-watch and department stores.  Famous shopping avenues like Passeig de Gracia and La Rambla also meet at this point.

parc guell barcelona

This building which looks like the gingerbread house from the Hansel and Gretel story can be found within Parc Guell, an estate that was designed by Antoni Gaudi.  Gaudi’s works are dotted all over Barcelona.

mar bella beach barcelona

Mar Bella beach is a beautiful beach with soft sand and clear waves that don’t get too high.  It is also a nudist beach.  I didn’t find that out until I got there and wondered why so many women were topless.  Naturally, you don’t have to go topless unless you want to so it’s still a great beach to visit for us more conservative types 🙂
